With the Final 4 just a day away, I figured this article was appropriate. Let me just say that both Rayson and I are not strong college sports fans.
There are two college loyalties that hold my brother's heart: the Long Beach 49ers and the Florida Gators.
The former would makes sense to most because he graduated from Cal State Long Beach back in 2007.
The latter is the college associated with his birthplace. Rayson was born in Jacksonville, Florida. Gainesville is about 70 miles away from the city, and is the more prominent university in the area. I'm not sure how much he remembers since he moved to Los Angeles back in first grade, but I can recall days in elementary school where students and teachers would be sporting orange and blue, celebrating the rivalry between the Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs, similar to the rivalry that Los Angeles has between USC and UCLA.
So while our friends cheered for local schools, he could cheer for LB, as well as a more prominent college sports program like the University of Florida.
For the brief time that Steve & Barry's were around in malls, we bought Gator shirts together. And so we'd show off our pride during the reigns of Tim Tebow's (football) and Joakim Noah's (basketball) national championships. Ah, good times...
Go Gators!
